Mathematics Programmes

There are three main degree programmes offered by the Mathematical Sciences programme at FOS:

  1. BSc in Mathematics
  2. MSc in Mathematics (by research)
  3. PhD in Mathematics

BSc in Mathematics

The Bachelor of Science is part of UBD’s Undergraduate GenNEXT Degree programmes offered from the Faculty of Science (FOS). Entry requirements are detailed here.

The GenNEXT regulations require 50-60% of modules to be major-specific, while 40-50% to be breadth modules (i.e. modules other than those offered to mathematics majors). This includes the Discovery Year programme as well as compulsory breadth modules.

Each module is weighted by its “Module Credits (MC)”. At FOS, students are required to take up at least 140 MC spread across the following:

  • 72 MC major core and options

  • 16 MC compulsory breadth modules from the following:

    • LE-1503 Communication Skills I: Academic Reading and Writing Skills
    • LE-2503 Communication Skills II: Academic Report Writing and Presentation
    • PB-1501 Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) or PB-1502 Introduction to Brunei Darussalam for non-Bruneian students
    • MS-1501 Islamic Civilisation and The Modern World
  • 32 MC Discovery Year module

  • 20 MC breadth modules

Several restrictions must be adhered to, including:

  • No more than 40 MC worth of Level-1000 modules
  • A minimum of 24 MC worth of Level-4000 modules
  • A maximum of 24 MC worth of modules per semester
  • At least 16 MC worth of breadth must be non-FOS breadth modules

For more information, please consult the FOS GenNEXT regulations.

MSc in Mathematics

The Masters degree programme is by research only. There are no compulsory taught modules, and students are expected to submit their research for publication at the end of the programme. Applications must have obtained a Second Class (or equivalent) honours Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university in a relevant discipline, and be able to satisfy the university’s English language requirements.

The duration of the programme is 12-24 months for full-time students; and 24-48 months for part-time enrolment. Students may start the programme either in the August or January semester.

PhD in Mathematics

Applicants must have obtained (at least) a Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognised university in a relevant discipline. In exceptional cases, subject to relevant UBD regulations, First Class honours degree applicants may be considered for entry. All applicants must be able to satisfy the university’s English language requirements.

The typical enrolment period for full-time students is 36 months, but may stretch up to 60 months depending on each individual’s circumstances. Part-time PhD programme typically runs for a period of 48-84 months. Students may start the programme either in the August or January semester.

Scholarships

Several scholarships are available to students to support their studies. Please have a look at this page for further details.
