Enhancing international students’ experience

Abstract

In our relentless effort to achieve global excellence, we have identified internationalisation as one of the key strategic thrusts. One of our key priorities is to recruit international students from our partner universities to undertake study abroad in our university. These students are important to us, as they will be our future unofficial ambassadors. Thus, enhancing their experience during short stints in Brunei is our main priority. In this paper, we not only discuss the support and services we put in place to attract these international students but also how we enhanced the international student’s experience. We also identified common problems faced by the international students so that we can continually improve our services offered to them. It should be noted that enhancing international students’ experience is an all-encompassing effort from the pre-arrival to post-departure. To address some of these common problems, we have put in place several notable support system such as ‘1-stop’ student central, student-buddy system, 24-hour hotline, ‘crash’ courses in local customs and traditions and many more. To conclude, we discuss possible future initiatives to further enhance the international students’ experience.
